COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The Language ABInitio course is designed for students to further their linguistic skills in Japanese, or for students to learn Japanese for the first time. This course focuses on communications through the use of the Japanese language. It aims to develop the four primary language skills; listening, speaking, reading, and writing through oral and written language. During the course, students will interact and become familiar with aspects of the everyday life and culture of the Japanese speaking world. This ensures that the appropriate emphasis is placed on communication.
This course is designed around three main areas; language, texts, and cultural awareness. Within language, special attention is given to the four primary language skills; accuracy and fluency, and the areas of vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and intonation. The variety of texts, spoken and written, is adapted to suit the needs of beginner students. Furthermore, cultural awareness is presented through the aspects of the everyday lives of the Japanese speaking people; such as their customs, eating habits, non-verbal behavior, attitudes, traditions, fashion, and folklore.

Quarter Test 27%, Wednesday test 18%, Participation 10%, Reading/writing 20%, Kanji test 5%, Vocabulary test 5%, Listening/speaking 10%, Knowledge/culture 5%
